Liver, Stomach & Upper Abdomen (GI) Cancers

The upper abdomen is the area in our body located just below of chest cavity.

The organs in this area include the liver, stomach, pancreas, gall bladder, and spleen.

Liver cancer starts in the liver cells and can spread to other body parts. Symptoms may include jaundice, abdominal pain, and weight loss. Chronic liver diseases, such as hepatitis B or C, or excessive alcohol consumption often cause it.

Stomach cancer affects the lining of the stomach. It is more common in older adults and may be caused by a diet high in smoked, pickled, or salted foods. Symptoms may include indigestion, stomach pain, and nausea.

Pancreas is a glandular organ that secretes certain hormones and digestive enzymes. It is located in the upper abdomen area and can develop cancer. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, jaundice, and weight loss.

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ in the upper right abdomen. Its primary function is to store and release bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver that helps to break down fats in the small intestine. The gallbladder also helps to remove waste and toxins from the body. Although rare in India, the gallbladder may develop cancer, and the symptoms include abdominal pain, jaundice, and vomiting.

Spleen stores and filters blood. It helps protect your body against and fight infections. It is located just below the diaphragm on the left side of the upper abdomen. The spleen can develop cancer. Abdominal pain, swelling, and fatigue are symptoms of splenic cancer.
